You did the correct way. (I made a mistake about the USB thing that was kinda how you import encrypted saves.)Did you re-sign also as I may have re-signed to my console. Upload the save to MediaFire and I'll decrypt it for you. Then you can use APOLLO to insert it into a new save. Either that or you'll need to update to 9.00 to do it yourself.

No, you probably can't do that as save data format gets updated, and no longer compatible with older updates. (Happens with a few games) You NEED to update your game to use this save.

Actually you CAN still grab the keystone if you can't start the game, as you get it from your SAVE GAME instead, which was made using the retail copy. Ten it will be the proper keystone. It's located in the sce_sys folder of your save game. It's the same keystone file as the one in the retail...
