Hell-Driver OS 1.0.1

A Mod for Helldivers 2

Hell-Driver OS

Hell-Driver OS adds autonomous FRV control to Helldivers 2, allowing supported vehicles to respond to commands and drive themselves without requiring a player to remain in the driver seat.
The goal is to make the FRV feel more like an autonomous squad support vehicle while still using the vehicle’s normal movement, steering, gears, braking, and game physics.
Once Hell-Driver OS has detected and connected to an FRV, you can issue supported commands and let the system handle the driving.

Main Features

Follow Me
Orders the connected FRV to follow your live position. The target updates as you move rather than sending the vehicle to a single fixed point.
Hold Position
Stops autonomous movement and parks the FRV in place until another command is issued.
HMG Point & Go
While using the supported HMG position, place a terrain/action ping and Hell-Driver OS will use that location as the FRV’s autonomous destination.
The vehicle will attempt to drive toward the ping, recover from blocked movement, and resume the original destination after obstacle recovery.
I’m Sorry
Activates the guarded Hellbomb self-destruct sequence for the connected FRV.
The system includes countdown/status handling and background Hellbomb preparation where possible to reduce the hitch that can occur when the self-destruct sequence is activated.
Autonomous Driving
Hell-Driver OS can control:
  • steering
  • throttle
  • braking
  • gear selection
  • target tracking
  • vehicle connection state
  • autonomous route/recovery state
Obstacle & Stuck Recovery
The controller monitors whether the FRV is actually making useful progress toward its target.
When it detects that the vehicle is blocked, it can:
  • stop repeatedly pushing into the obstruction
  • reverse away
  • change steering direction
  • pivot
  • choose a bypass side
  • generate an escape waypoint
  • remember blocked areas
  • resume the original Follow Me or HMG destination afterward
Rock-Climb Detection
Hell-Driver OS includes additional protection for situations where one wheel or one side of the FRV begins climbing a large rock instead of travelling around it.
The system monitors vehicle progress and chassis orientation so it can interrupt unsafe forward movement before the FRV simply keeps climbing the obstacle and tips over.
Rollover Protection
The FRV’s orientation is monitored while autonomous control is active.
If the vehicle begins tipping too far, Hell-Driver OS can cut drive input and apply braking rather than continuing to push the FRV into a rollover.
The system also uses the vehicle’s chassis orientation/up-vector so an overturned vehicle cannot incorrectly appear “safe” just because one calculated roll value becomes small again.
Normal autonomous driving is only resumed once the vehicle is sufficiently upright and stable.
Terrain Safety
Throttle and movement behaviour are adjusted when the FRV encounters steep, unstable, or potentially dangerous terrain.
The controller is designed to prefer preserving the vehicle over blindly maintaining maximum throttle.
Minimal FRV HUD
A lightweight FRV HUD appears while Hell-Driver OS has a valid vehicle connection.
The HUD displays the FRV icon alongside its actual measured live speed, rather than a configured or requested target speed.
If a reliable vehicle health value is available, health may also be displayed.
When the vehicle is lost, destroyed, released, or otherwise disconnected, the HUD disappears automatically.
Performance Optimizations
Hell-Driver OS includes several measures intended to reduce unnecessary runtime overhead while keeping autonomous control responsive.
These include:
  • adaptive sensor/update rates
  • reduced unnecessary polling
  • cached runtime/world lookups
  • buffered diagnostics/logging
  • background Hellbomb preparation
  • prioritization of vehicle control and safety work over low-priority background tasks
The aim is to keep navigation and safety responsive without performing expensive work every frame.

Requirements

Hell-Driver OS currently requires:

  • HD2Runtime 0.28.1
  • Bingus Shared Loader
  • A supported Helldivers 2 FRV
Make sure the required runtime components are installed and functioning before reporting an issue with Hell-Driver OS.

Do not keep multiple old test, RC, or development versions of Hell-Driver OS installed at the same time, as duplicate packages may interfere with one another.

Bugs / Known Issues

Hell-Driver OS is still being actively tested, particularly around autonomous navigation and difficult terrain.

Some situations may still cause imperfect behaviour, including:

  • very large or irregular rock formations
  • narrow passages
  • steep slopes
  • one side of the vehicle becoming elevated
  • the FRV becoming physically wedged
  • unusual collision or suspension behaviour
  • partially overturned vehicles
  • fully overturned vehicles
  • environments where optional collision/environment sensing is unavailable
When full environment sensing is unavailable, Hell-Driver OS falls back to reactive obstacle detection, stuck recovery, learned blocked zones, rock-climb detection, and rollover protection.

Because of this, the system should not be expected to behave exactly like a developer-created navmesh AI in every possible environment.

If the FRV becomes physically unrecoverable, use Hold Position and manually reposition or reset the vehicle.

Reporting Bugs

If you encounter a problem, please include as much information as possible:

  • which command was active
  • which FRV you were using
  • what the vehicle did
  • what you expected it to do
  • whether the issue is repeatable
  • the relevant Hell-Driver OS log if available
  • a screenshot or short video for navigation/terrain issues
Logs are especially useful for improving obstacle detection, stuck recovery, HMG navigation, and rollover handling.

Please avoid reports that only say “it doesn’t work” where possible. Knowing what happened immediately before the issue makes debugging much easier.

Credits / Shout Outs

Thanks to the developers and maintainers of HD2Runtime and Bingus Shared Loader for providing the runtime and loader framework used by Hell-Driver OS.

Thanks to the wider Helldivers 2 modding and reverse-engineering community for documenting game systems, runtime behaviour, and vehicle mechanics.

And a big thanks to everyone testing Hell-Driver OS and providing logs, videos, screenshots, and gameplay feedback.

A large part of the navigation, obstacle recovery, rollover protection, and vehicle-safety behaviour has been improved through real in-game testing.

Support

If you enjoy Hell-Driver OS and want to support continued development, testing, and future improvements, you can support the project on Ko-fi:

Support is completely optional. Testing, bug reports, logs, and constructive feedback are just as valuable.

Would it be possible to get the ping to work as a dispatch when outside the car? Like sending it out as a remote hellbomb for example
