The Brazilian Army officially used the FAP (Fuzil Automático Pesado, or heavy automatic rifle) as its squad automatic weapon until 2013/2014, when the FN Minimi was adopted to replace it. The Marine Corps and Air Force also adopted the Minimi to replace the FAP
It has been used since the mid-1960s by the Brazilian Army (EB) and Brazilian Navy (MB) by the Marine Corps (CFN), equipping its combat groups (GC).
The FAPs, obsolete and discontinued in production, present difficulties in obtaining spare parts for repairs and, therefore, are being replaced.
Due to the wear and tear and obsolescence of this weapon, and aiming to adapt the replacement weapon to the biotype of the Brazilian combatant, the Logistics Command researched the market for a family of weapons that presented performance and technical characteristics similar to those of the FAP.
