Trench Warfare 1.3.0

A Mod for Helldivers 2
Trench Warfare akl_mod_preview_image
Trench Warfare Enhanced
Dig in. Hold the line.

Trench Warfare Enhanced adds three four entirely new stratagems to Helldivers 2, designed around battlefield preparation, terrain deformation and defensive positioning. Carve out cover with concentrated artillery or conceal your advance behind a walking wall of smoke.

These are custom stratagems added through HD2Runtime. Existing stratagems are not replaced or modified (exception of shovels).

Three FOUR New Stratagems:

  • Entrenchment Drop: Deploys two emergency entrenching tools to arm a division with emergency weapons or to expand a trench system.
    • Replaces an expendable stratagem of the user’s choice. Will be converted to a new stratagem if/when HD2R allows.
    • NOTE: The entrenchment drop shovels cannot be removed from the pod by hand. This is a limitation of the code and cannot be changed by me (using the tools currently available). They can be picked up from the ground, however, so shoot the pod to release them, and then they can be dropped and picked back up freely.
  • Foxhole Charge: Calls down three precision 120mm shells on a single location, spaced 0.25 seconds apart. Designed to excavate a compact fighting position.
    • Cooldown: 100 seconds
    • Code: → ↓ ↓ → ↑ ↓ ↓
  • Trencher Charge: Drops eight 120mm shells along a 15-meter line perpendicular to your throw. Use it to carve out a defensive trench for your squad.
    • Cooldown: 180 seconds
    • Code: → ↓ ← → ← → ↓
  • Smoke Barrage: Uses the Walking Barrage pattern to deploy 15 smoke shells in five advancing salvos over approximately 27 seconds. Conceal an advance, withdrawal or defensive position.
    • Cooldown: 65 seconds
    • Code: → ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ↓

All stratagems have unlimited uses and fixed targeting patterns, with no random artillery scatter. Foxhole and Trencher use the game's natural terrain deformation, so the resulting cover depends on the ground you hit.

Requirements

  • Helldivers 2 on Windows PC
  • Bingus Shared Loader v15+ / API 1
  • HD2Runtime v0.30.0-dev+ / API 1 by skyeshade
  • A mod manager (HD2 Arsenal recommended)

Installation

Import the ZIP into HD2 Arsenal and enable it. Install the dependencies separately, then select the new stratagems from HD2Runtime's custom stratagem panel on the loadout screen.

Compatibility and limitations

  • Designed for solo/host play. HD2Runtime multiplayer support is experimental.
  • The 120mm shells fall vertically rather than following the angled trajectory of vanilla artillery.
  • Stratagem settings are fixed in this release.
  • Remove the old Barrage Shaper Test mod if installed.

Credits

  • skyeshade: HD2Runtime, custom stratagem framework and bombardment executor.
  • CowboyBingus: Bingus Shared Loader.
  • ivoryapples: SEAF Drop, which inspired the concept.

Shoutout to Tehehe123, who realized you can shoot the pods to get the shovels free. No, I cannot change it so you can pick it up right out of the pod and yes, it does drive me crazy too.

Before anyone asks: no, I cannot get a drop-pod to call down shovels. I tried and while they can populate a drop-pod, shovels apparently are missing a tag that allows them to be taken off of a wall, which (believe it or not) is different from being able to be picked up off of the ground. Yes, I was surprised by this also.

If anyone figures it out, let me know and I'll credit you or point people to your mod. I am also open to other ideas.

Not as far as I know, that’s where I started. I can say with certainty it’s not tied to damage or demo force. I didn’t try push force but I really doubt it. None of these affect width or speed and depth is another beast entirely.

The biggest issue is that the game has a max terrain deformation value for shovels, but this isn’t applied to orbitals, which have a separate max depth (about 2x deeper). You can see this if you drop a hellpod on a hand-dig trench.

I have no clue where that’s stored, and even if I found it I’m not sure Shodan or Runtime can edit that. Best guess? If I got my hands on a copy of the game with a pre-buff shovel, I might be able to pop it open and see what they messed with. As far as I know, only the Custom Galactic War guys have that and they seem to be an insular bunch. If you find out more I’d be happy to update the mod and give hella credits, cause you’d be a lot smarter than me.
Thanks for your in depth reply, I have tried finding it as well because I saw a video of someone who pulled it off and the shovel was digging more than double the width and depth, unfortunetly I wasn't able to find the video again but it is possible from what it looks like.

If you find it again, let me know! I would be super interested. Once HD2SE comes out, anything might be possible.

I am having an issue selecting the strategems, they show up during the loadout/strategem screen but when clicking on them to select them nothing happens, did I miss anything?

Not if you have HD2Runtime. It’s been updated a lot lately- maybe skyeshade put out an unstable build? Send me your log and I’ll take a peek.
