Question -
If I do replace my HDD, can I reinstall 5.05 or will I be forced to get the latest update?

U can install 5.05 firmware but u need to download recovery firmware version 5.05 because that normal file wont install.

U also need a usb with Folder structure PS4/UPDATES and ur usb need to be fromated in exfat. Then u have to restart the PS4 in safe mode. Hold the power button 7 seonds or longer till u listen to the second beep and it will install automatically.

i have done the hdd swap to a 2tb using the 5.05 recovery worked a treat i also backedup my ps4 in settings to a external and i backup my database wit stoogeds payload and reinstalled from the backup then installed all the files from the database backup over ftp took a while but didnt lose a thing. still had my psn profile settings and save games

Yes, this is possible, this is exactly what I done. I upgraded my internal hard drive from 500GB to 8TB (using the Nyko expansion thing)...
I had to use the recovery 5.05 FW (I was already on 5.05 with my previous 500GB hard drive).
Works 100% no problem.

So i got my ps4 last week and it was on 4.07. I updated to 5.05 and everything went smooth. However I ran out of space. I came across a 750gb with 7200rpm so I swapped them out and had some issue with the update pup. You should get the full pup. If it's less than 900 mb and you're getting errors try downloading the full firmware install. Hope this helps at least 1 person.

When you click on download choose what you need: a) update (smaller file) or b) recover (big file).

I used exactly this firmware when I upgraded from 500 GB to 2 TB and it worked absolutely fine.
