Updates for Xenoblade Chronicles 2

V0.9.0

Patch 0.9.0 is one of the largest updates so far, with corrections and improvements throughout the game.

  • Further revisions were made across the main story, Blade quests, regular and mini quests, DLC content, Bonding Talks, inn scenes, field dialogue and other side content. Lines that changed or obscured the original meaning were corrected, missing details were restored, additions that were not present in Japanese were removed, and awkward wording was cleaned up where needed.
  • A large number of localized names that were still present have been restored to the names used in Japanese, including character and NPC names, enemy names, weapon names, attacks, skills, locations and other proper names. Enemy naming in particular received a broad cleanup, removing many invented localization names that were still left in the patch.
  • Battle and system text received another major cleanup as well. This includes skill and Art names, status effects, effect descriptions and other gameplay text that was inconsistent, unclear or mechanically inaccurate. Several descriptions that gave the wrong condition, omitted part of an effect or used the wrong system terminology have been corrected.
  • Tutorials were also revised where their explanations were inaccurate, incomplete or based on older wording, including Challenge Battle tutorials that still used outdated text.
  • Nopon dialogue was cleaned up further to remove localization-only speech gimmicks. Invented forms such as Grampypon, Unclepon, biggipon/littlepon, brotherpon/sisterpon and similar -pon forms were removed where they do not exist in Japanese, along with forced broken English, automatic third-person self-reference and generic 'friends' added by the localization. Actual Nopon speech habits from the Japanese text are still preserved.
  • Terminology was made more consistent throughout the game, including Divine Beast, Assist Core, Down/Rising, Blade Resonance and related battle terms. Foreign words that are deliberately foreign in Japanese are kept where appropriate instead of being replaced with unrelated English names.
  • Text wrapping and compact UI labels were also adjusted where necessary so the corrected text fits the interface without changing the full terminology used elsewhere.

Notable name changes
A large number of NPC, enemy, weapon, attack and skill names were changed throughout the game. Listing all of them here would make the changelog unnecessarily long, so the tables below only show some of the more notable character and location changes.

Companion wiki userscript

A separate optional userscript for Tampermonkey and Violentmonkey is also available as an additional download. It replaces localized character names, location names, terminology and other text on many of the most widely used Xenoblade wikis so they match the patch, making those wikis much easier to use while playing.
Nintendo’s 3.0.0 update did not add any new dialogue, quests, item descriptions, or other translated content to the files I checked.

The main technical change is that 124 tables previously stored inside common_ms are now also included as separate BDAT files. The original tables are still present inside common_ms, and the new standalone versions contain the same records, IDs, ordering, and normal text.

There are no new records and no removed records. I found only 50 differences in the Japanese data, all of which appear to be internal placeholders or technical keys rather than actual game text.

I have prepared compatibility versions of all 124 standalone files using the existing fan translation. The original common_ms files and the rest of the translation remain unchanged.

The current release should most likely continue to work with game version 3.0.0, since the old tables are still present. Even so, this is an updated version of the patch with the new standalone files included.

This should make the project easier to port if custom firmware support becomes available for Switch 2. It will also reduce the amount of work required if Nintendo releases another update for the original Switch version and starts using these standalone tables more extensively.

The full compatibility layer has already been checked:

  • 124 standalone files added
  • 28,937 records verified
  • no missing or additional records
  • no shifted IDs
  • no changes to existing fan translation files
  • no new text requiring translation
  • no JSON structure or technical-field mismatches
- Fixed a bug in Ruby text (the rebalance script wasn't working as intended - it was replacing the U+2000 (EN QUAD) character, which is required for this feature to work, with regular spaces, ultimately causing Ruby text with more than one word to fail)
- Numerous typo corrections
- Many dialogues in the main storyline have been revised
- Virtually all lines where text was cut off have been fixed.
There’s a good reason for this major update. In addition to correcting a few typos, the issue of text being cut off (due to overly long lines of dialogue) has been virtually eliminated - especially in speech bubbles during unvoiced dialogue. In fact, you’re unlikely to encounter any cut-off text in the game anymore.
- A massive amount of corrections and general fixes.
- Most of the side quests have been entirely retranslated. Many of them still require some editing, but these remaining changes are mostly just going to be minor tweaks. A large number of people dedicated their personal time to make this a reality, which is great because initially, I only planned to translate the blade stories from the side quests. Everyone who wants to be credited for their help will be officially mentioned in the first post once the patch reaches Release Candidate status at some point in the future. I want to remind everyone that even though the vast majority of the content has been translated completely from scratch, this project is still in the early beta phase. Because of this, you might see text getting cut off in certain places, or you might run into minor bugs and similar issues. This is especially true for the side quests, because the allowed character count inside the dialogue bubbles is extremely limited. As of right now, there are around 800 lines of text that are cut off. For the majority of these lines, they are missing only one or two characters. When you look at the scale of the entire script for the game, which is likely the most extensive and complex script out of all the Xenoblade games, 800 lines is essentially nothing at all. Still, please keep in mind that you might encounter this kind of thing while playing.
- A lot of the everyday dialogue lines spoken by the non-playable characters have been completely translated from scratch.
- We have fixed a very large number of bugs and resolved many previous instances of cut off text.
- All of the text lines have been run through a specific re-balance script. The purpose of this script was to divide the lines up into equal parts.
